100% renewable

Today, Fortum owns and/or operates 160 hydroelectric power stations around the Nordic region. 100 percent of the electricity it sells comes from renewable energy sources, with hydropower accounting for 28% of power production in 2017. Landafors is one of Fortum’s many power stations, located in Ljusnan, 20 kilometres from Bollnäs. It is a flow station and the installation has a Kaplan type bulb hydro turbine with an output of 14 MVA.

Semcon’s solution

The work involved supplying electrical and control equipment, including PLC and HMI systems, relay protection, low and medium voltage switchgear, magnetisation equipment and DC systems. The delivery included complete programming and start-up of the control system with PLC systems, relay protection and phase equipment. The control system for the hydroelectric power station is built using Siemens S7-300 and WinCC Scada.

The result in Landafors

When the upgrade of the entire control equipment at Landafors power station was complete, both personal safety and fire safety has increased. Semcon’s work also resulted in increased technical performance and service life. Fortum gained access to a new operator interface with a more flexible operating style, both as new remote control with improved monitoring and as remote control of the station from the control centre. The upgrade of the control equipment also resulted in reduced maintenance costs for Fortum and facilitated reduced environmental impact.
