Hydrogen Gas

One of the great challenges of our time is to meet the energy demand while also reducing our climate impact and decreasing unwanted emissions. Many agree that hydrogen gas will play a key role in the necessary transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and a sustainable energy system.

Around the globe, activities in the area of hydrogen gas are increasing. With hydrogen gas, we can store, transport, and supply renewable energy from sources such as solar and wind. Using hydrogen gas together with fuel cell technology gives us hydrogen-free cars and buses that emit only clean water. Today, the technology is used worldwide to store solar and wind power, make homes more energy self-sufficient, and free vehicles completely of harmful emissions.

At Semcon, we’ve been working for more than a decade to develop fuel cells, hydrogen gas systems and integration.

Semcon’s role

As hydrogen gas and fuel cells replace fossil fuels and traditional combustion technology, a new industry is emerging. It also means a demand for engineering competence and new system solutions. Semcon is contributing to this development with specific expertise in fuel cells and extensive experience in various areas of technology, including the automotive industry, electrification, and energy.

For hydrogen gas to be climate-neutral, it must be produced in an effective and fossil-free manner, such as through wind or solar energy. These are also technologies where Semcon has expertise.

Our expertise in hydrogen gas and fuel cells

Semcon has been working for over a decade on the development of fuel cells, hydrogen gas systems and integration for several different clients and in various research projects. We work with solutions for both the production and use of hydrogen gas and have an excellent grasp of the entire chain, from the development of components to electrification and integration for various applications. Semcon also has unique competence in advanced automation and production of components and fuel cell stacks.

We work with specialist areas such as:

  • Simulation (CFD and FEM flow plates, stack and hydrogen gas systems)

  • Design (flow plates, hydrogen gas systems and integration)

  • Production (automation concepts, robotic cells and special purpose machinery for the manufacturing of flow plates and fuel cell stacks, test cells, tools and fixtures.

  • Integration (project management, research projects, electrification, integration of vehicles and stationary applications)

  • Software development (control system applications, software and system integration of fuel cell modules in complete products)

What is a fuel cell?
Hydrogen gas can be used as energy in fuel cells. A fuel cell is an energy converter that can be effectively used to convert the chemical energy of hydrogen gas into electricity and heat. The residual product is clean water. Fuel cells can power electric motors in vehicles, thus replacing combustion engines, and can also be used to supply energy to homes and buildings. They can even be used in smaller devices such as mobile phones, computers or power units for recreational boats.
