Specialists in Hydropower.

What is the role of hydropower today, and how can we take advantage of the potential of the energy source? Here you can read about Semcon’s experience – and our thoughts ahead of a future with digital hydropower.

During 2017, hydropower accounted for 40% of electricity production.

74% of the world's total amount of renewable energy is generated by hydropower.

By 2035, the UN estimates that global energy consumption will have increased by 50%.

The intelligent hydropower

We see an increasing number of examples where stakeholders around the world change their ways of working with the energy source and how its importance is increasing, as more and more intermittent power generation is supplied to the electrical system. In this change, intelligent control and monitoring is even more important than before. It should be possible to operate the stations in an even more flexible way – and with high availability to balance fluctuations in the electricity grid. This places great demands on the control systems. We see how new technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence can be used as tools for identifying development areas in the operation of power stations. Our hope is that we have so far only seen a small part of what is possible in digital hydropower. Semcon’s ambition is to be able to provide new insights and working methods – using our combined knowledge in energy production and connected devices.

Our expertise in electrical and control equipment

Since the 1990s, Semcon has offered specialist services and total contracts in electrical and control equipment for hydropower. Together with our partners, we can manage complete projects, from project design and development to validation, commissioning and technical documentation. All by building up each project on the relevant competence, modern and proven technology, as well as a customer-focused perspective.

We work in specialist areas such as:

  • PLC, HMI and SCADA for station control
  • Station and power unit control
  • Magnetisation
  • Auxiliary systems
  • Remote control
  • Generator switchgear
  • Local supply
  • Turbine control
  • Relay protection systems
  • DC systems
  • High voltage switchgear
  • Testing and start-up
