Planet.

Climate change is accelerating and there is now more or less consensus that we need to do our outmost to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. To have a chance to succeed with the 1.5 °C ambition, we need to halve global emissions each decade, with 2030 as the first milestone and with the ambition to reach net-zero emissions no later than 2050. Other problems are our current over-consumption of natural resources and the escalating loss of biodiversity. All these problems are tightly interconnected, and it is important to maintain a holistic perspective.

We need system changes in our society, with a specific focus on a quick transformation of the energy sector, the industry sector, the transport sector, the construction sector, the food sector, and the agriculture and forestry sectors. To manage this, we need to shift from our current linear economy to a circular one. We only have one planet and humans need to learn to live within the planetary boundaries. For this to be possible, we need a holistic perspective and sustainable innovation with a focus on human and planetary needs, and in this, Semcon can be of great assistance.

In line with our Climate and Environmental Policy, we strive to maximise Semcon’s positive impact through our customer assignments, while we at the same time take decisive steps to minimise our own environmental footprint.

Planet – in our customer assignments.

We work in many customer projects within green technology, such as renewable energy and electrified transport solutions, where we have solid expertise in both battery technology and fuel cell technology. We perform climate calculations and support with energy audits and energy efficiency of buildings and production systems. We perform digitalisation and automation projects, which offer great opportunities to streamline processes and to reduce emissions and resource consumption.

Our competence within both physical and digital products and the interface in between, as well as the production process, makes us a strong partner in the shift to circular products and business models. In connection with these, we can perform lifecycle assessments (LCAs) and environmental product declarations (EPDs). We also have expertise in various disruptive technologies that will play an increasingly important role in the climate transition, such as Internet of Things, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins, additive manufacturing/3D-printing, AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality).

Reference case

Planet – in our own operations and value chain.

Semcon is a consultancy company and therefore our own operations and value chain have a fairly limited environmental footprint. It does not matter, we must all do our part to ensure that we succeed with the climate transition. For many years, we have worked to reduce our environmental footprint. Among other things we have measured and reduced our emissions linked to business travel, increased the number of offices in environmental certified buildings and set environmental guidelines for purchasing.

During 2021, we took the next steps to accelerate our own climate transition and committed to set science-based targets in line with the 1.5 °C ambition of the Paris Agreement, see the Science-Based Target initiative. Until we have set our final targets, our minimum ambition is to halve our value-chain emissions no later than 2030 and be net-zero no later than 2045.
